[Guide] How to Download and Play Shoddy Touhoumon 2.
« on: January 23, 2013, 05:51:47 PM »
Configuring Shoddy Touhoumon 2 is really just about as easy as "Download and Play." Although for the few users who may have trouble with the download or aren't familiar with the interface of their own PC for some reason, then I guess this is for you.

Since this is a Java-based program, you'll have to install Java from Java.com if you don't already have it. It's a free download. You'll just have to find out which version is meant for your system, but that's not too difficult.

1. First you want to Open/Download shoddy2beta.zip from the website. The download link can be found on the thread that you probably found this place from. Hit the "Download it here." (Note that the Client version is at 2.2.1 at the time of writing this, but the method of downloading and running this should not change in the future).

2. Open shoddy2beta.zip (You can close down your internet browser now; everything else will be taken care of in Shoddy)

3.  Inside, you'll find a folder named Shoddy2. DRAG/EXTRACT THIS TO YOUR DESKTOP or somewhere you won't lose it at. Attempting to open the client in the folder while it's still in the zip file will yield the "A Java exception has occurred" error. I'm sure I'm not the only one who has had this problem in the past, and this is half the reason I'm writing this.

4. Once your Shoddy2 folder has been extracted to your Desktop (or where ever you put it), open it and run ShoddyBattleClient2.

You'll be greeted with the welcome window shown below. But we're not ready to play yet (we still need to painlessly nab the sprites first).

5. Click File and then click Preferences.

6. Navigate over to the Sprites Tab. Delete any installed sprite packages from this menu if any are there. Select "1.8" from the drop down menu. Now click "Add..." and wait for the sprites to download.

And that's all. Hit connect and Register a name for yourself, and then log in! (Only a Username and Password are asked of you).

Shout-out to Derx

Notes:
-The population tends to rise during "After School - nighttime" hours in the west. During this time around 10~16 people are online, and it's very easy to find someone to battle with.
-Your color is permanent. It helps the human eye to easily idenfity you in the chatroom I guess...
-We don't really have an established metagame as we're always finding new ways to play the game, new tactics, and new radical ways of playing once never used puppets (Read: Ruukoto).
-This game is very enjoyable for those with basic competitive Pokémon knowledge. Still, we appreciate all new users from newbies to experienced battlers. Smogon.com is a great place to check out for articles on competitive battling in the Third Generation.
-A very small Standard ban-list is in play to keep things fair. This list includes Defense Satori, Attack Shinmyoumaru, Speed Aya, Sendai, and Transcendant Maribel.
--Little Cup has a small ban-list as well, consisting of Chibi Rikako, Chibi Yumemi, and Chibi Kasen.
-Basic competitive clauses are in effect in Standard. Sleep Clause, Freeze Clause, Evasion Clause, OHKO Clause, and Species Clause.
-Using two different forms of a character is not considered breaking the species clause. For example, you can have Wriggle and Speed Wriggle on the same team.

Unofficial Bullshizzle:
Customized with competitive battling in mind, but the stat spreads on these puppets in particular differ from the stat spreads found in other ROM hacks.
-Ten Desires cast
-Kasen line
-Magic Stones
-Double Dealing Character cast
-Transcendant Renko/Maribel.

Feel free to ask any questions in this thread if you're still having any troubles whatsoever.

Step 4 is where I've been running into a problem and the reason I thought it was outdated, I get an error that it is unable to open the program.
Which java are you using to open it? I'm using the web launcher starter just like Pokemon Lab uses to open it.

If you could right click on that same file in step four for me and tell me what java program you use to execute the file? That would be awesome :)

Right clicking > Open gives you that error?

I guess I should mention that Java is a requirement to play the game. I knew I was forgetting something. I don't believe our version of Shoddy/Pokémon Lab supports any Web launchers.

Yes, java web launcher starter. I'm using JRE7. :P I can run other Java programs just fine. Please tell me, by right clicking on your shoddy program, clicking properties and telling me what it uses to launch the program.

As far as I know, you'll have to actually download java from Java.com.

Download the appropriate version for your system and try the steps again?

If you answer my one question this will all be solved! :D Thanks in advance.

If you cannot start the jar file even after rebinding .jar files to java.exe, you might be missing the '-jar' parameter. When manually binding an extension to a new file, Windows doesn't pass any parameters other than the filename afterwards. Not sure how this can be fixed. Maybe regedit.

As a workaround, you might want to try this:
  • Open console (Start->Run "cmd")
  • Type this: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre7\bin\java.exe" -jar ShoddyBattleClient.jar
In this command, you might have to change a) "Program Files (x86)" to "Program Files" if you installed a 64bit JRE, b) "jre7" to "jre6" if you're still running Java 6, and "ShoddyBattleClient.jar" to point to where you unpacked the actual JAR file.

Yo, long time no see.

I tried to download the client on a new computer but it doesn't work.

Here is a pic of shoddy and my error box:

Is there something new with the server or is there something wrong on my part?
Terribad: and by hell, he means a wrathful kuri
Terribad: WITH ALL THE FURY OF THE HEAVENS
Terribad: DESCENDED UPON US MORTALS
Terribad: LIKE THE FIST OF AN ANGRY GOD

Terribad: OH HERE IT GOES AGAIN

Was it connected to the internet? Perhaps the server was down or restarting? Try again; it's up as of me writing this.

Or maybe it's some other problem causing that error that I'm not aware of.

Hi, I'm that guy who sometimes appeared on the server monhs ago, I dunno.

Anyway, I want to come back to it, but the reason I left in the first place is still here : I can't open the .jar file. Not only it wasn't linked to the runtime in the first place, if I do rebind it to it, here's what I get :

Something about a "main class not found or unable to load". I have the latest Java, and I can't type the DOS command, as apparently C:\Program Files isn't a valid command. Anybody have an idea on what's wrong ?

I'm basically clueless on getting Windows to recognize how to open files properly but you should be able to open Shoddy via command line and thus get a batch file to do the job for you. See if you can open Shoddy from command line by navigating to the directory where Java's installed (should be Program Files/Java/jresomething/bin/java.exe) and then explicitly typing out the path to the .jar file (something like java -jar "../../../../Users/whatev/wherever/shoddy/is/ShoddyBattleClient2.jar"). Let me know if that works and I'll see if I can make it more convenient.

(since i'm guessing you don't use command line much: a directory and a folder are basically the same thing, cd (directory) opens a directory, dir shows you everything in the current directory, and every directory has two hidden directories in them named . and .., which point to itself and its parent respectively.)

Not so bad support as it now works, and I have a nifty .bat to run it. Thanks again !
