ROM Hacks + General Discussion / Movesets organization?
« on: August 22, 2013, 07:07:27 PM »
First of all, I'm aware we don't have an established metagame yet, but, if movesets are eventually made for most (if not all) mons, then... wouldn't this section be seriously crowded? It actually already is a bit crowded, imho.

What I mean is, couldn't there be some form of categorization for the sets later - as in, sweeper, supporter and so on? This would make it easier for both teambuilding and organization.

Also, if a mon can work in more than one category, it'd probably be convenient to leave a copy of the thread in every applicable category (meaning Tenma would be in all categories).

So, I've been an ass recently (even moreso than Agastya).

For that, I'd like to apologize to the community.
I've also been writing too many words. Word overdose is bad for your health.

If anyone thought I wanted to actually rule the server or anything when I was saying I was going to rule the world, that's not what I had meant at all. It may not look like it, but I always kept in mind that this server was Exs' and Agastya's; that, as well as the fact that, in a way, it belongs to every one of you.

Nevertheless, I got ahead of myself and gave you all word poisoning.
I don't have money to buy you medicine, so I'll shut up for a while instead.

Because I'm me, though, I don't plan on actually stopping talking.
It's just that I won't do so with words. Not with more words than necessary, at least.

Anyway, sorry, everyone.
People who say what they want hear what they needed to hear. In a way, that's good for me, I guess.

EDIT: sometimes, I do feel that constructive criticism is necessary. That won't change, and when I do try to contribute in that way, I will still shower you with words. Please bear with it if it does happen.

However, I don't want to be poisoning you all. There are many issues in which criticism is either entirely unnecessary, best kept short, or doable without words. I will try my best to observe those three, but do keep in mind that I'm not very good at it.

If anything happens someone can just come up and slap me in the face, but that'll *hopefully* not be needed.

ROM Hacks + General Discussion / Wiki Changelog
« on: August 05, 2013, 06:47:45 PM »
It's nothing too fancy, I just thought I'd set up a wiki changelog, just in case anyone was curious. This'll probably be updated often.

The changelog starts on July 25 2013, since that's when I joined the wiki things started getting active again. Seems like there was a pretty long period of inactivity before that.

Anyway, here you go: http://thpp.supersanctuary.net/wiki/Changelog

Shoddy Touhoumon Info/Discussion / Lansat Berry
« on: August 04, 2013, 10:39:31 AM »
This thing.

So, I was randomly checking the Lily Black wiki page, when I suddenly saw that she has a 5% of holding it when caught. Then I look at the berry's wiki page and find out that Agas says it's pointless anyway, because Scope Lens.

You know, there's a reason why it's Lily Black's held item. Sure, the boost it gives is the exact same as Scope Lens', but, unlike Scope Lens' boost, it's passable by Baton Pass, just like Focus Energy; that's also the reason it doesn't stack with Focus Energy, since Lansat is essentially that move put tightly inside a pinch berry.

So if a Lily Black procs it with a set like Subs/Taunt/BPass/Selfdestruct, then passes it to something like Scope Lens Meira, all of Meira's hits will have a whopping 50% chance of critting. That's honestly scary.

Then you'd say, "isn't something like Liechi or Petaya better?", but a crit boost is something that applies to both special and physical attackers, unlike either of those berries. So something like a Lily Black running Liechi wouldn't be limited to passing to a physical attacker on a pinch (well, it *could* pass to a special one anyway, but then the boost'd be wasted). However, that isn't true for Lansat.

I'm using Lily Black for the sake of example, but it's not like that'd be the only mon where it'd be worth using - anything running BPass (and preferrably Substitute) that's not on a dedicated Baton Chain team could run it, really.

Then you'd say "just run Salac", but not everything appreciates a Salac boost that much - choiced priority doesn't give a damn, for example, and nor does it help much if you run paralysis support.

Also, it's not like Meira or Scoped mons'd be the only useful receptors, either: try passing it to a SWriggle running Petaya and Overgrow, for example, and preferrably from a Lily Black - suddenly, SWriggle has 33% crit on her Aeroblast, and if she gets to less than 25% she'll have an Overgrow Petaya Nature Sound to work with that just happens to work as a Gen IV hi-crit move, and even if someone resists it she still has that 33% crit Aeroblast. Yipes.

Yes I just stole Doesnt's SWriggle build

Aeroblast isn't really SWriggle's main move, but that was just for the sake of example: anyway, if you have anything that uses a crit move a lot, then that move will suddenly be upgraded to 33%; that, and if you happen to run two~three mons with crit moves (that's not too uncommon: think of sand teams, or of Aeroblast + Draw the Line), then you're suddenly up for some fun. Even better if you run something Scoped.

Then you'll say: "but the difference from 25% to 33% isn't much". In paper, it isn't. However, in practice, it's not "from 25% to 33%"; it's "from 1/4 to 1/3". If you run Draw the Line or something, then your opponent's aware you crit often, but he's still not too scared of it. However, if you suddenly get a crit boost on top of that, then your opponent is very much likely to just as suddenly get scared of your RNG, and many, many walls can get broken down in one sweep by criticals. That can be huge, you know.

Hence, I'm formally asking Agas to actually implement Lansat in Shoddy, and making this topic a poll/discussion so that there can be some majority pressure in case he's stubborn.

It's not like Lansat is OMGBESTOPTIONEVER for any BPasser - in many cases, running either Liechi or Petaya is probably still recommended - but it's definitely a good option, and it can be far better than both Liechi or Petaya depending on the team running it, either due to the plain passing versatility or due to the team being able to just crit abuse and laugh.

tl;dr: lansat can be bpassed, it's not bestest thing ever but it can be useful, implement it already dammit

Off-topic / New forum layout
« on: August 04, 2013, 01:09:01 AM »
Just a simple poll to see what the users think about the new forum layout. I voted on "it's great!" myself, this feels much better even when it's such a simple change.

Posted on off-topic because it wouldn't really fit in anywhere else.

, drunk go Agastya, home you're

Shoddy Touhoumon Info/Discussion / Ways to make Shoddy more popular?
« on: August 01, 2013, 06:08:03 PM »
This topic is meant to be a discussion for ideas and ways to... guess what. :rolldice:
That's right, it's meant to MAKE SHODDY MORE POPULAR!

Spoiler

I'd like to make a few suggestions myself, but I'm sure you all have some ideas, so please do your best to share them with us.

Oh, and if you ask me why I want Shoddy to be more popular: a larger community creates a very competitive environment, which is just fun and perfect all-around. The overall gameplay level increases, and as it does, there will be stronger and stronger opponents to face. It'd never really get boring, now would it?

And if anyone says something's too hard or almost impossible in this case... nah, not really. The steps are mostly laid down, they just take a lot of work to do.

Well... Shoddy isn't very popular right now.

Agastya would probably argue that there were days when it was even LESS popular; nowadays, Shoddy does have a stable community, but it's still small, and communities which don't grow only tend to dim out with time.

However, there must be some ways to make it more popular, right?

What I have in mind is discussing this each step, one by one. Of course, that requires that the steps be laid down in the first place. So here we go.
  • Advertisement for the Shoddy client itself, as well as for the wiki as the most reliable THPP reference around.
  • Actually making the wiki "the most reliable THPP reference around". That includes both visual and functional improvements.
  • Making the community more beginner-friendly, as in: introduction guides, measures to make balanced teambuilding easier, and so on.
  • Visual improvements to the forums, such as a different way to lay categories out, new categories and subforums, and so on.
  • agastya fix solarbeam n curse bug pls, n stop being haetd by evry1
  • voodoo
steps #5 and #6 are best steps ok

As for the order of the steps... I do have some ideas for #1 (advertisement), but I think there isn't much point in advertising too much before completing the wiki and tweaking the forums.

Anyway, for #1, I didn't think of anything flashy, really: just putting up links to "Touhoumon 1.8 netplay - Shoddy 2 client", "THPP wiki" and "THPP forums" in places that are usually references for Touhou fangames. What I can think of right off the bat is en.touhouwiki.net and touhou.wikia.com. Of course, said links would be limited to the actual THPP page in those wikis, but it's a start.

The next step from there would probably moving onto GBA Pokemon ROM hacking communities... or maybe Touhou communities... or why not both. The first option'd probably be the faster one, but both should have plenty of people interested in it.

However, this can NOT be done too intensely early on, because if a mass of players does end up miraculously forming thanks to our effort, then that mass will be largely uninstructed in THPP, and if we can't hope to instruct that mass and have them actually building teams, nobody'll really want to stay.

I guess the first step for everyone should be playing through Emerald first, so as to at least have a general idea of how the types work? Would that require additional steps, then?

#2 and #3 can't really work without each other. Why did I even put them as separate steps?

Well, first of all, the wiki needs to be visually appealing. So broken links should be fixed, and so on. Also, we really need a better main page! Just saying.

It also needs to be easy and intuitive to navigate through, so pages like Common Support Moves have to be in places where people actually see them.

Also, if someone checks the Spikes or Levitate page, they'd expect a full list of mons who can run it, at the very least.

That and there might be a need to make redirections in the fashion DParsee -> Defense Parsee for EVERY shard form, as well as changing the order of the base stats (the actual one is off-putting for old Pokemon players), and some disambiguation pages here and there.

Of course, that's already a lot of work.

However, that's not even the point. The point is making teambuilding easy.

For that, my suggestion is for a Category to be created: that Category would hold puppet Categories, as in "Bulky Attacker", "Spinner" and so on, with one puppet being able to be in more than one category at the same time, even within a single set.

From there, if there is a "Teambuilding" page categorizing teams into basic types - semi-stall, offensive, whatever - and basic guidelines for it, like advising people to run at least one Spinner unless they know what they're doing... then teambuilding'd be that much easier.

There should also be external links on a puppet's page linking to the forum sets made for it. That way, the sets would be way more useful and approachable. And of course there should be sets for EVRY TAWHOU! Well that's my dream anyway, lol.

Also, this really has to become more popular, but so does the fact that it doesn't actually account for abilities.

I got things to do (unfortunately), so I'll wrap this up with #4 for now, the forums themselves.

Well I didn't think much about the forums tbh. However, I think everything'd be far more visible if the subcategories were to be below the main category one by one, instead of just being there as little links. That shouldn't be too hard to do, really.

As for new categories, no idea, but it's for sure that these forums could use a lot of new ones, and that the right ones'd actually get plenty of use. I personally vote for a blog-style News category just to make those news easier to see (should be easy to do for the most part as well).

Ok, discuss, comment, suggest, complain, whatever you all wish. Actually, I'd love if this was actually turned into a discussion, but I did put down plenty of ideas there already, at any rate.

tl;dr: Shoddy's kinda unpopular, so I thought of a few steps of how to try and make it more popular or die trying. This is supposed to be a discussion based on these steps, including suggestions and ideas from whoever and whatnot.

ROM Hacks + General Discussion / Order of stats used in the wiki (Spd)
« on: August 01, 2013, 04:47:58 PM »
So yeah, exactly what the title and poll say.

The wiki uses the order HP/Atk/Def/Spd/Sp.Atk/Sp.Def in all of the tables which require base stat information (one major example is the Touhoudex). That's because that's how it appears in the game data.

However, that could be confusing for new people who are used to Pokemon, because most major Pokemon sites - Smogon, Bulbapedia and Serebii, to name a few - instead opt for the order HP/Atk/Def/Sp.Atk/Sp.Def/Spd. To those new people, the stat order used right now looks completely out of place.

That includes me. I'm not trying to nitpick, I'm saying this because the order honestly confuses me.

So I was thinking of changing it.

I'd handle the manual labor, no problems there. However, the wiki isn't mine for me to do as I please. Hence the poll, to hear out everyone's opinions (or attempt to, at least).

I think the current community could probably do without the inversion, but... the problem is for the new players. I plan on trying to bring in more people and doing some advertisement here and there (that includes advertising the wiki itself as a THPP reference), but if a mass of new players DOES come and see that strange order, some might be put off by it.

That's the main reason I'm in favor of changing the order, and I think it's an agreeable reason for everyone else as well.

tl;dr: the stat order the wiki uses right now is strange and would look almost random for new players used to Pokemon, so I wanted to change it and hear out your opinions about it.

Hello, everyone. I'm your everyday average ordinary player, and this is my ordinary introduction topic.

Okay that is too much Marisa already.

So yeah, I'm Naï (Na I in Shoddy). Just call me whatever you want as long as it makes some sense.

I'm not too new here, but I hadn't introduced myself in the forums yet, so I figured I might as well.
