Good Morrow, lads. It's been some time.

More than 7 years ago, I made a chart for my own convenience of what Effort Values each Puppet gave the player upon defeat. Obviously it was for EV-training, min-maxing purposes. However, I figured that someone else could benefit from it, so I posted it here.

Here I am, once more, updating the post, mostly out of boredom, but also out of feeling sorry for that one odd person that decided to pick up a Touhoumon hack when almost everyone at this point has moved on to TPDP. Guess I'm just feeling nostalgic.

To whomever is maintaining the wiki at this point, I think it would be nice if you could include a page or a table featuring the Effort Value Yields for each puppet.

In the meantime, I realize that since the website I used to initially post the Effort Value Yields is no longer working, I'll paste it as a wall of text this time around, as well as share a public sortable spreadsheet. If anyone out there is interested in making a Touhoumon game, either in the form of a ROM hack or using Essentials (see: Faith & Prayer), this may be a resource well worth checking out.

Note to anyone using this in the future; these values pertain only to Purple and, for the DDC cast and extra forms introduced in a 6 year old hack that is "Unnamed" to this day, Doesnt's hack. I cannot guarantee that these values are the same in other Touhoumon games like Enhanced Reloaded or the Japanese "Zoku Gensoukyo Scenario".

Hi there.

As someone who once worked on a game myself, I'd like to ask how far along are you in terms of overall game design. It really does help that you've planned everything up to the end (including postgame), or at the very least have an outline of how things will go, especially if you plan to have chapters.

In another life, I discussed this at length with another user on here, but it bears repeating here. I'll omit some points for the sake of brevity

I think everything said here and here, even though they apply to ROM Hacks, also applies here.

As someone who's also worked with RPG Maker XP (as well as someone who initially used Derx's Touhoumon Essentials as a base until I realized I needed to cut out unnecessary resources and make it strictly a Touhoumon game and not just have the original Pokemon sit in a corner to pretend that they don't exist), I've learned quite a bit from working on my current project.

  • How long is the game going to be? Is there a post-game or an extra challenge at the end? What will want to make the player come back or replay the game when it's over?
  • Before you continue to go ahead on working on the game, ask yourself how much work you're prepared to do in the event you don't get the people you need (scripting isn't easy) and make sure you have the whole story outlined from start to finish and not a cluster of plots just thrown together like Another World (the original Gensokyo Scenario was never finished).
  • Most important: Have fun making the game. If it stops being fun to work on or play, come back to it later or figure out why it wasn't fun for you and resolve it. It's alright if you never come back to it (unless it really bothers you).
  • 2nd most important: Don't be afraid to accept criticism or hear out people that may nitpick (read: bash session) your game at some point. As I've learned the hard way, at times it's justified.

That's all I've got. Good luck!

To be honest, I was going to wait until someone else replied, but I'm genuinely interested in seeing if you can pull it off. It also helps to have a constant line of communication or updates on the project. Otherwise, you may find yourself and others losing interest in the game and moving on to something else. There's also the fact that most people here seemed to have moved on to TPDP or waiting for the translation to come out.

I don't say all this to discourage you, but to have you keep all this in mind when you work on the game.

  • You'll want to find something that makes the game stand out. What makes it unique besides being a Touhoumon 1.8 game? Are there any new elements you want to throw in?
  • Another thing to consider is the difficulty curve. In what way is the game challenging? You don't want to make something as absurd as Dark Rising.
  • How long is the game going to be? Is there a post-game or an extra challenge at the end? What will want to make the player come back or replay the game when it's over? (Kinda cuts into #1)
  • (This point I've made in a previous thread) Before you continue to go ahead on working on the game, ask yourself how much work you're prepared to do in the event you don't get the people you need (scripting isn't easy) and make sure you have the whole story outlined from start to finish and not a cluster of plots just thrown together like Another World (the original Gensokyo Scenario was never finished).

It's alright if you never come back to it (unless it really bothers you). [inspoiler]For me, Gaiden was an experiment, so I'm not profoundly bothered that I stopped working on it.[/inspoiler]
  • 2nd most important: Don't be afraid to accept criticism or hear out people that may nitpick (read: bash session) your game at some point. As I've learned the hard way, at times it's justified.

Speaking as someone who's never used Discord, I think it'd be nifty to have an alternative. Although, I'd most likely join to continue to lurk there as I do in IRC (until I have something to say, at least). I'll sign up in the meantime.

I first saw her as a sprite on Tohofes. Didn't know who she was until now. I think I had her down as a Nature/Heart type (9 resistances with 6 weaknesses).

Thanks for answering! The issue is that I still don't know which of the hacks I want to play. I have already played and cleared World Link and Another World, which leaves Puppet Play Enhanced I guess... Also, I'm not clearly sure if there are new hacks or which are the popular ones, that was one of the points I wanted to ask you. About the header part, I did some google'ing and well, it seems like a header issue as you said, but I don't know how that works...

There's Purple by Agastya (Basically Pokemon Emerald), Unnamed by Doesnt (same as Fire Red, but has DDC cast and higher overall difficulty), Blue (also the same as Fire Red, but with more variety with regards to early-game wilds and few roadblocks), and Tweaked by Neotornado (more 1.5 based, but has a Physical/Special split and Fairy typing). Touhoumon Cirno is also a possibility. And that just about covers the noteworthy English variants. I can refer you to some Japanese ones as well, if you're interested...

All of them work on my PSP (although I use gPSP-mod instead of gPSP-J).

[inspoiler]Now if only Faith and Prayer could be ported to PSP...[/inspoiler]

[inspoiler]My own game is trash, as well as incomplete and incompatible with PSP, so don't bother.[/inspoiler]

ROM Hacks + General Discussion / Re: 1.8J confusion
« on: January 28, 2016, 11:12:27 PM »
So I decided to give the Japanese release of Touhoumon a try so I can get Japanese mons in my other hacks for shits and giggles, and when I unzipped the file, I was met with this.

Now, I'm smart enough to know I can just "try every patch until you make it work" but I'm more curious as to what each of the patches actually DOES. I pieced out through google translate and general filesize that the one in the red box is probably a bug fix/optional patch of sorts, but I don't know exactly from there on.

The ips in the top folder (red box) is a bug fix patch. The two ips in the bottom folder (blue box) are the same except for who you play as; The top one sets the protagonist as Maribel and the Rival as Renko, while the bottom has you play as Renko and sets Maribel as the Rival. You patch only one out of the two in the second folder, then apply the bug fix.

Have Fun!

9
There's also the fact that people need to clear the game first and foremost before they could even do netplay battles, whereas in Shoddy you can just make a team from the Team Builder and do whatever you want instead of having to constantly reincarnate and raise puppets to Level 100 for each one you want on your competitive team. Personally, I think that's a great weakness and hinders accessibility to the game (or at least anyone who plays casually or doesn't want to clear the game in order to netplay).

Not that making people clear the game is a bad thing (it teaches newcomers about the game and what to expect), but it'd be nice if Hemo could make a version of TPDP specifically for netplay...

10
Theoretically, you could just EV train the bad stats to an acceptable level (or max them out), but that can be very time-consuming. That and I'm not sure if there are even any places to EV Train in Tweaked (I'm one of the few that still haven't played it).

Otherwise, I'd just catch another one / reset until I get something acceptable (unless this is a Nuzlocke, in which case EV Train it, deal with it, or use it as fodder at some point).

Shoddy Touhoumon Info/Discussion / Re: Shoddy Touhoumon 2 [Status: Up]
« on: January 18, 2016, 05:11:10 AM »
Would we expect to see Kosuzu, Sumireko, and all of the LoLK cast in future updates?

I suspect that if that were to happen, it won't be for a while. Not to mention the fact that there aren't even any decent sprites for Sumireko and the LoLK cast (We'd need the Chibi and Evolved (Front and Back), as well as menu sprites). [inspoiler]Reimufate's sprites are an abomination, in my opinion, so they don't count.[/inspoiler] Let's not forget to mention that not even the Japanese Touhoumon wiki has any updates or unofficial patches that include them. And this is all before considering their typing, balancing, and figuring out what role they would play in the meta that the other 200+ puppets don't already play.

While I'd like to consider having Sumireko and the LoLK cast, I feel there's also been a lack of any new development regarding Touhoumon 1.8 as a whole. Most people that come now focus on TPDP (or are at least waiting patiently for a translation). I'm almost sure there'll never be a Shoddy TPDP server, since it'd take a very ambitious mind to program one (anyone who's up for the challenge, you have my respect).

As for Kosuzu...I'm really not sure why she's not on the server. She does have a battle and menu sprite, but I guess she would be considered Reisen II-tier if she was added.

UPDATE: Apparently Tohofes and PixEvildrake in fact DO have decent Chibi and Evolved LoLK sprites, albeit only front sprites. Somebody would still need to do back sprites and menu sprites. We'd also need permission (In Tohofes' case, if we can). My other points still stand...

Have a gander:

[inspoiler]Also, is it just me, or does the thing Chibi Doremy is holding remind you of an onahole?[/inspoiler]

12
I let fivequestionmarks on IRC choose via ^randomteam3. First playthrough got me Sakuya (who I later made Scizor Power Sakuya). Next run, I'll go with Miko (going for a Ten Desires Team). Fortunately, they don't change much between the original game and YnK.

13
Here is a link to YnK's wiki: http://wikiwiki.jp/enbu-ap/

Worth noting that at this time, it really is a bare-bones wiki; Most of the Extra Puppets only have their typing listed. No stats. No movepools. Locations are probably in, though, and it will expand rapidly as those that work on it come back from their New Year's party or whatever. It's worth noting that they are in the new year, though.

Wait, so is it an entirely new game or a patch for the game?

It's a patch for the most part, since you need the original game in order to install YnK. In a sense, it's also a new game, since you need a new save file.

The Melonbooks link is now active (you can purchase the expansion now), since it is actually December 31st in Japan. I guess it activated as soon as midnight struck.

EDIT: There is an update to YnK on FocasLens's website, updating the game to v1.010 (at the time of writing this). Make sure to download it in case the version on Melonbooks is not updated.
