Metagame Discussion / Power Yumemi
« on: August 02, 2016, 03:46:44 PM »
been using this girl, figure she deserves an analysis since she does a lot of work and i've seen plenty of other people use her

Type: Water/Light
Abilities: Unwavering Heart (absorbs Illusion moves to clear status) and Aggressive (raises FAtk or SAtk on entry)
Wiki page: http://en.tpdpwiki.net/wiki/Power_Yumemi
90 HP
55 FAtk
80 FDef
130 SAtk
75 SDef
90 Speed

Set: Super Soaker
Ability: Unwavering Heart
Mark: Black
EVs: 64 Satk/64 Speed/2 HP
Item: Good Earrings/Sapphire Hairpin
- Aqua Cannon
- Cold Rain
- Lightning Speed
- Inferno/Star Flare/Gravity Blast/Phase Inversion/Upbeat

Usage is incredibly straight-forward: team her with momentum users to get her in on something slower at full HP and click Aqua Cannon. It's Water Spout; 150 BP STAB from full HP with specs rivals Kyogre's power. Cold Rain is there to use if rocks are up, Lightning Speed lets you pivot out of and punish super-fat natures and water absorb things. Inferno is preferred in the last slot for coverage against Nature; Light STAB is unhelpful for coverage and Star Flare is pitifully weak. Gravity Blast can be used to hit...something? Phase Inversion is preferred for non-Choice sets due to sheer utility.

Other options include Aggressive, aka Download, aka another potential +50% to damage that is usually overkill in my experience when Unwavering Heart eases teambuilding much more. You could probably get a lot of kills with a Scarf Download set but you're also prone to becoming set-up fodder at inopportune times, and most things with balanced defenses will creep SDef to deny you a good boost (the only other Download puppet is the Utsuho form with 60 speed).

Metagame Discussion / Assist Chen Analysis
« on: January 23, 2015, 05:59:25 PM »

Assist Chen
Type: Wind/Earth
Stats: 60 HP, 50 FAtk, 85 FDef, 80 SAtk, 85 SDef, 120 Speed
Ability: Niche (Adaptability) or Adverse Winds (Arena Trap)

The Obvious Set
Item: Good Earrings (Choice Specs)
Ability: Adverse Winds
Mark: Green (+Speed) or Black (+SAtk)
PP: 64 SAtk, 2 SDef, 64 Speed
-Godspeed Air Raid
-Waves of Earth
-Lightning Speed/Chrome Ray
-Puppet's Grudge

After 1.8's fun meta with no trappers besides Wobby, we now embrace the return of Dugtrio. Assist Chen's ability stops puppets from fleeing unless they are Wind-type or have Air Cushion. Combined with 120 Speed and Specs, this makes her a solid revenge killer able to ensure offensive threats stay dead. But why stop there...?

Literally Satan on Crack
Item: Healing Charm (Lum Berry)
Ability: Adverse Winds
Mark: Green (+Speed)
PP: 64 SAtk, 2 SDef, 64 Speed
-Godspeed Air Raid
-Encourage
-Brave Song
-Rising Sun/Barrier Option

Usage is simple; come in on any status or Earth move used by something with less than 120 base Speed, then use Encourage (Encore) to keep them locked into it while Adverse Winds (Arena Trap) keeps them from switching. Then use your latter two moves to boost up. Brave Song is needed to get you +6 SAtk; the choice between Rising Sun and Barrier Option depends on whether you fear scarfers and fastmons or priority spam more. Works well with momentum users to get her in safely, and puppets that are weak to Earth.

Checks: Putting Shed Shell on stuff works, but you only get one so try not to make the other 5 mons on your team weak to trapping. Keeping Power Aya or a Smooth Sailing Mystia form in reserve stops her from sweeping, but doesn't prevent her from doing her job of trapping and eliminating key puppets. (Also you can probably bulk creep Power Aya...especially if Kee Berry is around)

tl;dr: stall is fuckin' dead lmao

Reincarnation is a system for improving the ranks of puppets, allowing them to be viable for competitive play. To access it, visit Patchouli in the Scarlet Devil Mansion's library after the credits roll.

Most puppets that you catch in-game will have less than satisfactory ranks for serious play; indeed, most serious play expects you to have S in every relevant stat.

Fortunately, I have on hand two very competent puppets to help fix this Ruukoto.

There are five slots on the reincarnation screen.

The first slot is the mon you are trying to improve. Be aware that reincarnation will clear its movepool and reset it to level 1, so don't reincarnate your best mons right away.

The second and third slots are the mons whose rankings are used. They are not changed by the process; use mons with good ranks here.

The fourth slot is for marks; these let you change the mark (basically the nature) of the puppet. Using a mark does not consume it. You get all five marks from the reincarnation table when you first use it, and the game will not let you sell or discard them, so don't worry about losing them. The stats they provide are as follows:

Red Mark: +10% Focus Attack
Blue Mark: +10% Focus Defense
Black Mark: +10% Spread Attack
White Mark: +10% Spread Defense
Green Mark: +10% Speed

The fifth slot is for magic stones. There are eight of these, and what you use here determines how ranks are inherited. As with the marks, these are not consumed through use and the game will not let you discard or sell them.

Nothing: Three ranks are chosen at random and replaced by the ranks from the other two puppets. The rest are rerolled.
Omega Magic Stone: All ranks are derived from the first puppet, ignoring the other two. Use this if you just want to change a puppet's style or mark without changing its ranks.
Gold Magic Stone: The first puppet's HP rank is sustained. Three other ranks are chosen at random and replaced by the ranks from the other two puppets; the rest are rerolled.
Red Magic Stone: The first puppet's Focus Attack rank is sustained. Three other ranks are chosen at random and replaced by the ranks from the other two puppets; the rest are rerolled.
Blue Magic Stone: The first puppet's Focus Defense rank is sustained. Three other ranks are chosen at random and replaced by the ranks from the other two puppets; the rest are rerolled.
Black Magic Stone: The first puppet's Spread Attack rank is sustained. Three other ranks are chosen at random and replaced by the ranks from the other two puppets; the rest are rerolled.
White Magic Stone: The first puppet's Spread Defense rank is sustained. Three other ranks are chosen at random and replaced by the ranks from the other two puppets; the rest are rerolled.
Green Magic Stone: The first puppet's Speed rank is sustained. Three other ranks are chosen at random and replaced by the ranks from the other two puppets; the rest are rerolled.
Rainbow Magic Stone: One rank is chosen at random and rerolled; the rest are replaced by ranks from the second and third puppets.

The Omega Magic Stone is given to you when you first use the reincarnation table. The six colored stones are found in the Misty Lake Cave. The Rainbow Magic Stone, which is by far the most useful, is obtained from Kasen by finishing her sidequest; the procedure for obtaining it is below.

Spoiler
First, go to the foggy area on the Youkai Mountain's back path. If you haven't seen the credits yet, it loops endlessly; after you have you can explore the area. Towards the back you will find Kasen; after talking to her, four items appear in Gensokyo (and a number of unrelated events activate, such as Suwako).

The first item is in the foggy area Kasen resides in. Search for a map filled with frogs; one of the frogs near the north section gives it to you when you talk to it.

The second item is in Muenzuka (the area filled with roses behind the Forest of Magic).

The third item is hidden in the well behind the Hakurei Shrine. It is not obtainable until after you beat Shinmyoumaru, who appears in the room with the Akyuu Doll.

The fourth item is hidden in the cave behind the Myouren Temple. Be aware that picking it up starts a battle.

Once you have all four items, take them to Kasen and she will give you the Rainbow Magic Stone.

An example of reincarnation using the puppets shown above with no magic stone:

Focus Attack and Focus Defense were inherited from Kogasa, while Spread Defense was inherited from Sariel. The rest were randomly determined.

If we try using the Rainbow Magic Stone:

HP, Focus Defense, Spread Attack, and Spread Defense were inherited from Kogasa, while Speed was inherited from Sariel. The Focus Attack was randomly determined.

Some useful probabilities:

The chance of getting a mon with 6 S-Ranks, using two parents who have 5 matching S-Ranks and a colored magic stone for the sixth stat: 1/256
The chance of getting a mon with 6 S-Ranks, using two parents who have 5 matching S-Ranks and a Rainbow Magic Stone: 1/96
The chance of getting a mon with 6 S-Ranks, using two parents who have 5 differing S-Ranks and a Rainbow Magic Stone: 1/48
The chance of getting a mon with 6 S-Ranks, using two parents who have 6 S-Ranks and a Rainbow Magic Stone: 1/16

Finally, every use of reincarnation consumes one Magical Fragment. As such, it's best to minimize the number of times you reincarnate each puppet to preserve fragments. You can get more by fighting wilds, or by playing netplay. If you want to farm magical fragments and have nobody to help you, you can copy the game's folder and run it twice, then netbattle yourself and repeatedly forfeit to gain 6 fragments per battle.

General Metagame / Speed Aya "Suspect" "Voting"
« on: August 24, 2014, 04:53:23 AM »
So Agastya unbanned Speed Aya so we could test her, in theory. It's been a while with her unbanned and Josh wanted a poll to see what we think of her, so here it is. I guess discussion could go here too but I'll leave it to Josh I think.

Movesets / [WIP] Namazu
« on: June 11, 2014, 04:51:55 AM »
there are more sets and i need to test this more, but this thing deserves an analysis so here goes

Namazu
Type: Wind/Earth
Ability: Water Absorb
Base Stats: 150 HP, 80 Attack, 80 Defense, 80 Special Attack, 80 Special Defense, 40 Speed

The Win(d) Fish
Item: Leftovers/Chesto Berry
Nature: Relaxed/Sassy
EVs: 164 HP/172 Def/172 SDef
 - Discharge/Thunderbolt
 - Earthquake
 - Toxic/Poison Jab
 - Rest

With its mostly lackluster stats and narrow movepool, one might wonder why Namazu would be worth running at all. The answer lies in its typing- Wind/Earth with Water Absorb allows it to wall a number of threats, such as Attack Murasa, Nitori, and Helper Eirin. Namazu is best run on defensive teams, or on offensive teams needing an answer to Rain and Helper Eirin. Discharge is the preferred Wind STAB, as 30% paralysis rate gives it more opportunities to nap off Rest turns and makes up for its glacial speed- Thunderbolt can be used if you want more power or to avoid parahaxing targets such as Sariel. Earthquake gives Namazu a retort against specially bulky foes such as Benben, who can be stalled out. The third move is up to preference- Toxic allows you to put a timer on foes such as Sariel, Benben, and Rin, while Poison Jab lets you specifically maim Defense Kaguya.

todo: test and analyze curse fish
test and analyze charge beam fish (lol)
write up checks & counters (dkaguya, vanilla medicine, sara, spikers in general)
make main set description not stupid

Teambuilding / gen 5 ou team
« on: April 03, 2014, 04:36:30 AM »
I really need an excuse to build an actual proper team so I'm throwing this embarrassment that still gets used out in the open. I imagine everyone already knows how it works but now there's no excuses.

Scizor (Speed Yamame) (M) @ Lum (All) Berry
Ability: Infectious
EVs: 4 HP/252 Atk/252 Spd
Jolly nature (+Spd,-SpAtk)
- Baton Pass
- Earthquake
- Poison Jab
- Spikes

Offensive spiker lead. Not the standard SYam set, but Spikes are helpful and she lets me pick on Mamizou leads, which were common at the time. SYams also bluffs TWPass merely by existing which is nice and tends to make the opponent scramble. She's also my only source of Miasma though so I tend to play cautiously with her- don't go for Spikes unless things take a turn for the stally.

---

Latios (Advent Yukari) (M) @ Leftovers
Ability: Advent
EVs: 252 HP/4 Spd/252 SpAtk
Modest nature (+SpAtk,-Atk)
- Energy Ball
- Mana Burst
- Nasty Plot
- Whirlwind

I don't even know what this was for so I'm not going to pretend I know. Modest STAB Energy Ball does more damage when it actually hits than some people might expect though, and her bulk helps stop the papery team from getting swept sometimes. EBall + Mana Burst is used for near-perfect neutral coverage, Nasty Plot is to (fail at) wrecking bulky stuff- DMeteor is absent because it's frankly terrible.

---

Breloom (Akyuu) (M) @ Leftovers
Ability: Focus
EVs: 252 HP/4 Def/252 Spd
Timid nature (+Spd,-Atk)
- Baton Pass
- Sakuya's World
- Sleep Powder
- Substitute

Double Powder Akyuu, the centerpiece of the team. Both Sleep and Freeze have a very real chance of lasting long enough to safely get a Sub to AdYukari or AFlandre, which greatly eases the pain that is their inability to aim.

---

Black Kyurem (Attack Flandre) (M) @ Mistress Outfit (Dark)
Ability: Hustle
EVs: 4 HP/252 Atk/252 Spd
Jolly nature (+Spd,-SpAtk)
- Poison Jab
- Steel Wing
- Strength
- Thrash

I still don't know how you lot haven't banned this yet but I'm perfectly okay with it. I noticed that Sub users tend to make AFlan cry, but the same principle works in reverse- AFlan's tendency to miss becomes a lot more tolerable when you have a buffer in front of you, and it lets her neatly remove her own checks as the foe has to send their faster mons in first.

---

Terrakion (Youki) (M) @ Lum (All) Berry
Ability: Insomnia
EVs: 4 HP/252 Atk/252 Spd
Jolly nature (+Spd,-SpAtk)
- Blade Flash
- Draw The Line
- Shadow Hit
- Swords Dance

SYams isn't very reliable as a fastmon or a cleaner so Youki is here. Blade Flash was for SAya originally (har) but it's the only priority on the team so drop it at your risk. Youki's STABs are fairly good for clearing out weakened teams and forcing stuff to switch, hopefully to Akyuu-bait- he also comes in nicely against many Steel attacks aimed at Flan.

---

Celebi (Defense Kaguya) (M) @ Leftovers
Ability: Natural Cure
EVs: 4 Def/252 SpAtk/252 SpDef
Modest nature (+SpAtk,-Atk)
- Giga Drain
- Hydro Cannon
- Ice Beam
- Recover

The most unfair defensive backbone I could find for the team while maintaining an offensive presence. I don't know why the EVs are like that either.

Fan-made hacks / Touhoumon Unnamed (1.8)
« on: January 29, 2014, 05:09:12 AM »
So lately I've been making a hack that attempts to fix some of the problems with FR 1.8. While it's great as a competitive game, the actual in-game is kinda meh. The roster is heavily limited until you beat the champion, and a lot of enemy sets are lazy and/or illegal (Sculpture Goliath!). This hack aims to fix both of those, while being a more polished game overall than Agastya's minimal port (which this uses as a base) and Enhanced.

Here, have some proof that I actually know how to hack a ROM:

http://www.mediafire.com/download/nmnb4pxww51a31m/ThmonUnnamed1.3.ips

The game currently goes up to the champion.

Other features:
-I've ported the base stat and movepool changes implemented by Emerald, so you can abuse things like Luster Purge TSakuya and Focus Letty.
-I've also ported all of the extended puppets from Shoddy, which includes the DDC cast.
-With regards to Emerald- it uses the same indexing, so Shingyoku/Tenma/Kasen/etc. can be traded between the two freely. (Extended mons are out, obviously).
-In case you didn't catch it earlier, shard evolutions are available in main-game.

Things I know aren't done:
-Dex entries for the extended mons. They have pages but no info- I've written some of them but I'm not in a terrible rush on that front.
-While the extended mons now have cries, their insertion means that the move Growl sometimes spits out the wrong cry for low-dex-numbered mons.
-While I don't intend to remove contextually appropriate references to Pokemon, I know I haven't fixed all of the text yet.

Thanks to the following for being awesome:
-Agastya- his Emerald hack was what got me into this scene in the first place and is still fantastic. He also made the 1.8 port to FR that this hack uses as a base, and provided a lot of stuff for me to reuse (Pokemon data tables, dex entries, etc.).
-EXSariel- designed the DDC puppets. Also made the icons for the TD puppets.
-Hemoglobin1AC- made Touhoumon a thing in the first place. Pretty much all the sprites were his handiwork, as well.
-This fellow whose name I daren't try to translate made the sprites for the extended characters.
-LeoModesto, for reducing some of the sprites to 16 colors.
-ZUN, for bringing us the cast of Touhous.
-Game Freak, for providing the wonderfully abusable mechanics of Pokemon.
-Karatekid552's (still under wraps) Pokemon editor, which made editing the extended mons significantly easier.
-Wichu's series of tools, which still hold up marvelously.
-Jambo51's Trainer Editor, A-Map, and HxD were all also used.
-The wonderful folks on Shoddy, for providing motivation and support.

Movesets / Aya
« on: September 07, 2013, 06:00:59 PM »

Type: Wind/Flying
Ability: Speed Boost or Own Tempo
Base Stats: 85 HP, 90 Attack, 90 Defense, 65 Special Attack, 90 Special Defense, 110 Speed

Support
Item: Leftovers
Ability: Speed Boost
Nature: Bold (+Def, -Atk)/Calm (+SpDef, -Atk)
EVs: 252 HP, 112 Def, 112 SpDef, 32 Speed
- Spikes
- Roost
- Whirlwind/Taunt
- Twister/Taunt/Soar/Toxic

Behold the second coming of Tenma. While Aya has nowhere near as much bulk and versatility as her Uber cousin, she still packs more support options than she knows what to do with. Invested 85/90/90 bulk with a fast Roost makes her surprisingly hard to kill, making her one of the most reliable spikers in the game. Whirlwind allows Aya to scout the opposing team and abuse her own Spikes- it is also crucial for preventing foes from setting up on her. Taunt similarly prevents foes from setting up, but can also be used to thwart recovery and status. Aya has plenty of other options- Twister allows her to keep her allies safe from Spikes, while Toxic allows her to wear down walls. She can also run Soar if you want some offensive presence, though an uninvested Soar will do pitiful damage to most things.

Aya's EVs are very flexible. The given EVs give good mixed bulk with enough investment to outrun base 130s (Nue) at +1. Mixed bulk is usually ideal as she needs to be able to take all sorts of hits to spam Whirlwind- she can go full physically defensive or full specially defensive if it suits your team better though. Running 88 Speed EVs to outpace base 140s at +1 is also an option- this allows you to pick on Lily Black switch-ins. Note that without investment you already outrun base 125s at +1, so if you aren't worried about other stuff coming in on you 0 Speed EVs should be fine.

If you run Soar, you will obviously want to us an Impish or Careful nature- its damage output is much more important than Twister's.

Offensive
Item: Airline Uniform/Lum Berry
Ability: Speed Boost
Nature: Adamant (+Atk, -SpAtk)
EVs: 168 HP, 252 Atk, 88 Speed
- Soar
- Hi Jump Kick
- Tailwind
- Taunt/Roost

Aya may seem outclassed as an attacker by the likes of Attack Reimu and Wriggle, but she has access to a few tricks they don't. First, Aya has such outstanding coverage with Flying+Dream that she can spare a moveslot to run a utility move. Secondly, she has access to Speed Boost, which when combined with Tailwind allows her to run full bulk investment to set up Tailwind much more comfortably than her peers. Finally, she has access to Taunt and Roost, which gives her either better staying power throughout the match or the ability to set up on phazers and status users.

Note that Aya is far from perfect at her job. While she can get to +1 with relative safety, she has significant power issues- 90 base Attack is not the best and she unfortunately lacks Brave Bird. When using Aya, make sure you are running her as a cleaner and not trying to punch holes- significant Spikes support and scouting is appreciated. If you want a bird that has more upfront power, consider using Technical Aya instead.

The suggested EVs maximize bulk and power, while still allowing you to outrun base 140s after a single Speed Boost. Note that even with zero speed investment she passes 500 Speed after a Tailwind, so you can run a 252/252 bulky set if you like.

Other Options

Aya gets ExtremeSpeed, but this move fits better on her more offensive Technical counterpart. She can also run Fake Out or Detect to guarantee a Speed Boost, but Aya's speed is more a luxury than a feature so this usually isn't worth a moveslot. The offensive set can run Steel Wing to clip Elis and opposing Aya, but the move has limited use otherwise and the latter is set-up fodder if you have Taunt. Aya can also pack Silver Wind or Heat Wave to lure Steel-types (read: Yumeko).

Team Support

Have a Sakuya switch-in. Non-robot maids love coming in on Aya to threaten her with Sculpture- while Yumeko can be dealt with via prediction and Steel resists (which you should have anyway), Sakuya threatens to freeze things and requires special handling- Advent Letty and Advent Ran make good candidates, though fast Lum holders and other Advents can work if you're careful.

Durable Water-types in general synergize well with Aya- they can absorb the Ice and Steel moves aimed at her, while relying on Aya to take Nature hits. Whirlwind Toyohime forms are noteworthy for being able to abuse Aya's spikes.

Checks and Counters

While Aya is resilient against many attacks, she is not invincible- extremely powerful attackers such as Attack Utsuho, Attack Patchouli, and any Flandre form will cruise right through her. Most Steel-types can also force her out- special mention goes to Yumeko, who plays mindgames with Pursuit, Sakuya, who threatens to freeze whatever switches in or put up her own Spikes, and Youki, who can SD on the switch and wreak havoc. Finally, if Aya is not carrying or does not use Taunt, Toxic will make her much easier to kill and paralysis prevents her from reliably healing.

Things change somewhat if Aya is running her uncommon offensive set- strong attackers must now have enough health to withstand a +1 hit to counter her. Yumeko and Rika still thwart her thanks to their resistance to Soar and neutrality to Hi Jump Kick- powerful Ice Shards and Blade Flashes will cut her down as well.

Furthermore, due to the radically different manner in which the sets are played, it shouldn't be too hard to identify which Aya the opponent is running and respond appropriately.

Shoddy Touhoumon Info/Discussion / Touhoumon Damage Calc
« on: August 19, 2013, 05:16:22 PM »
http://thpp.supersanctuary.net/calc/ actual web-based calc because i'm lazy
=====

So for a while, we'd been without a proper damage calculator- to my understanding most people were using either Marriland's old one or Honko's Pokemon-based calc.

Shai informed me that Manlycalc's source was publicly available by merit of it all being Javascript, so I decided to take a look at it and adjust it for Touhoumon. Unfortunately I do not know the first thing about web hosting, so you'll have to download it for now. It can be found here: http://www.mediafire.com/download/idinbo18000mwls/Hatcalc.zip
