: Writing differences?
: KuroShinki February 28, 2016, 10:45:52 PM
I think it's more appropriate if I ask this here rather than the Translation Project, so...

I was wondering why the names of the characters are written in both ways: when they speak, is wrote in complex Kanji or whatever is the name, while in battle/menus, they are written in Hiragana...Something about programming errors? I'm glad that the names are written in simple Hiragana/Katakana: helps me to learn a bit of the writing.

Also, it seems that Kikuri and Shingyoku are written in Romaji...error on my copy? (I don't have the english patch anymore).

Last question: it seems that Sukuna is written as Shinmyoumaru, which is the last name. Do you know why?

As far as I can tell the characters themselves use kanji (it's their name in the first place) while the puppets are given names in hiragana (the puppets resemble the characters that they are named after, but they aren't actually the character, so they use a different spelling to differentiate).

The HRtP characters don't have an official kanji spelling for their names (apart from Mima who reappeared in later games and received a kanji spelling), so their names are written in katakana (for the expansion) or English (for the original) instead. Again I could be mistaken, but I'm pretty sure that's the reason.

And Shinmyoumaru is her given name (I know it doesn't sound like a given name, but it is). Her family name is Sukuna. People that call her "Sukuna" are probably just doing so because "Shinmyoumaru" is a more complicated and longer name to say. Games that do it are just trying to fit the name in the available space. Minamitsu (Murasa's given name) is in a similar situation.

Thanks for the answers!

Makes sense on Sukuna, even tough I though that was her first name...and Murasa is not her first name as well?! Totally didn't know about that!
